CHAUKHUTIYA

Chaukhutiya is small valley town situated in Almora district. As the names reflects itself Chaukhutiya words literal meaning in kumaoni is “Chau” means four and “khut” means legs. It means Chaukhutiya has for legs for four different directions one for Almora, second for Ramnagar, third for karnpryag and fourth for Tadagtaal. Group of temples also found here which were built by Katyuri kings in between 9th to 10th century, another site at Varkmundeshwar Temple during excavation 9 more old temples found, according to tradition and belives this set of temples are 9000 years old. Locally famous Devi temple “Agneri Devi Temple”, is dedicated to the Goddess Kali is situated near Chaukhutia town. Another devi temple dedicated to Vaishno Devi and the ancient forts and ruins of Katyuri dynasty are also in the area.

How to reach

By Train / By Road: There have been plans to link Chaukhutia to Ramnagar with a Rail line.

By Air: The closest airport is at Pantnagar, which is placed around 7 hours drive away. Pantanagar have few scheduled flights from Delhi.
