As name is self-explanatory Uttarkashi is considered the northern Kashi or Varanasi. It is to belived Uttarkashi is also a shiv nigari. The town is situated at an elevation of 1200 meters at bank of river Bhagirathi. It has an average elevation of 1,165 metres (4,436 feet). It is also border district of Indian republic towards Indo-Sino precincts. Mentioned in skand puran, Uttarkashi has been a meditaitonal ground for many sages since ancient times. Word famous The Nehru Mountaineering Institute is also located in Uttarkashi. One can also visit Gangotri’s hot water springs which is approx. 110 kms from the Uttrakashi main town. Origin og River Yamunotri also can be visited as excursion trip from Uttarkashi.
